One of the most successful applications for flexible packaging and lightweight films has been in food and drink protection and preservation. In less than a few decades, lifestyle changes and the emergence of modern retailing have demanded an innovative approach. There is now greater access to, and choice from, a vast range of foods from around the world – all of which must be kept in perfect condition on its way to the high street and into consumers’ homes.
Due to the increased pace of life there has been much greater interest in the snack food industry and the need for convenience foods which are quick and easy to prepare. More flexible packaging methods and innovations in the quality of plastic film have been developed to meet these needs, and these include film wraps; bags; pouches; trays and a wide range of flexible containers. Around two thirds of all the food purchased is protected in plastic flexible packaging on its journey. The three manufacturers represented exclusively by Friedheim International in the UK and Ireland – Beck Packautomaten, Iman Pack and Audion Elektro – all supply equipment that is designed to meet the needs of the food and drink industries.
Plastic films are the most economic, safe and environmentally friendly method of containing goods on pallets or mixed loads whilst in transit - this brings major advantages in health and safety throughout the supply chain. Whether plain or printed they can allow visibility of the nature and condition of the consignment. Alternatively, coloured or opaque films can be used to prevent identification of high value products, thus reducing the risk of theft or tampering. Films are available for conventional, shrink or stretch wrapping of products and an almost endless range of plain or printed films can be produced to collation wrap batches of products, either for distribution or for shelf-display as a multi-pack, ie, for canned beverages or canned foods, where they can be used as a promotional tool and for special offers.
